Geoinformatics Center (GIC) of Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) has prepared dynamic emergency response maps in response to the Sri Lanka floods that have affected 15 districts. The data viewer combines satellite imagery with photographs and incorporates river water levels, and data on loss and fatalities to provide an overview of the extent of the floods.
GIC staff, Biplov Bhandari won the Young Author Recognition Award at the 8th ITU Kaleidoscope Academic Conference held in Bangkok, Thailand in November 2016. Further, their paper titled "Intricacies of implementing an ITU-T X.1303 cross-agency situational-awareness platform in Maldives, Myanmar, and the Philippines" Awarded as the Best Paper by the committee. The paper was co-authored by Biplov Bhandari, Angga Bayu Marthafifsa, Manzul Kumar Hazarika, Francis Boon, Lutz Frommberger and Nuwan Waidyanatha
The Geoinformatics Center of Asian Institute of Technology, organized a special lecture on Potential Applications of UAVs in Disaster Risk Assessment, Monitoring and Response on 26th October 2016. The guest speaker was Dr. Hiroshi Inoue from National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience (NIED), Japan.
Geoinformatics Center (GIC) of Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) jointly hosted with Sahana Software Foundation to organize 2016 Common Alerting Protocol (CAP) Implementation Workshop on 23-24 August 2016. The workshop was held at the Asian Institute of Technology Conference Center (AITCC).
As an activity under the CAP on a Map project, a Regional Workshop was organized on August 22nd at the Asian Institute of Technology Conference Center. This project is jointly implemented by the Geoinformatics Center (GIC) of Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) and Sahana Software Foundation. The main agenda of the workshop was to get the participants familiar with the Common Alerting Protocol (CAP), lab/exercise and prototyping with the SAMBRO software which is the result of this project and evaluating the workshop and project as a whole. Eliot Christian, Advisor to IFRC and WMO, Nuwan Waidyanatha, Sahana Director and LIRNEasia Emergency Communication Expert and Biplov Bhandari, AIT Researcher and Sahana Developer were the main resource person for this workshop.
