Final Regional Workshop for Applying Space-Based Technology and Information Communication Technology to Strengthen Disaster Resilience

As an activity under the Applying Space-Based Technology (SBT) and Information Communication Technology (ICT) to Strengthen Disaster Resilience, a Final Regional Workshop was organized on July 18th to 20th at the Asian Development Bank, Philippines.

By integrating ICT and SBT tools with national Disaster Risk Management (DRM) architecture, timely
and accurate information can be delivered to relevant communities, individuals, rescuers, and decision makers to save lives and properties at risk The Asian Development Bank has initiated a technical assistance project for risk prone countries to strengthen their resilience by applying SBT and ICT tools.

The project is funded by the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction with technical assistance from the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) and implementation is led by GeoInfrormatics Center at Asian Institute of Technology.

Partners include Asian Disaster Reduction Center (ADRC), Remote Sensing Technology Center (RESTEC) and GeoThings.

Pilot Areas in four countries; Armenia, Bangladesh, Fiji and the Philippines have been selected for this project.

GIC has Developed "Emergency Mapper" Qgis Plugin

qgisGIC has developed "Emergency Mapper" Qgis Plugin. This plugin creates maps for emergency response purposes. It utilizes the value added products prepared from the satellite images acquired immediately after a disaster under the Sentinel Asia initiative.

Researchers from the University of Tokyo Visits GIC

Two researchers from the University of Tokyo were visiting on 21st July 2017 at Geoinformatics Center (GIC). GIC staff members attended to their presentation and some of GIC staff members were giving the presentation.

Emergency Response Data Viewer for Sri Lanka Flood

Geoinformatics Center (GIC) of Asian Institute of Technology (AIT) has prepared dynamic emergency response maps in response to the Sri Lanka floods that have affected 15 districts. The data viewer combines satellite imagery with photographs and incorporates river water levels, and data on loss and fatalities to provide an overview of the extent of the floods.

GIC Staff Awarded in ITU Kaleidoscope Conference

GIC staff, Biplov Bhandari won the Young Author Recognition Award at the 8th ITU Kaleidoscope Academic Conference held in Bangkok, Thailand in November 2016. Further, their paper titled "Intricacies of implementing an ITU-T X.1303 cross-agency situational-awareness platform in Maldives, Myanmar, and the Philippines" Awarded as the Best Paper by the committee. The paper was co-authored by Biplov Bhandari, Angga Bayu Marthafifsa, Manzul Kumar Hazarika, Francis Boon, Lutz Frommberger and Nuwan Waidyanatha
