Venue: Geoinformatics Center, Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok, Thailand

This course is designed to develop skills and knowledge on the application of hydrological and hydraulic models for river basins for an effective flood risk management.

Background

Floods have been a dramatic interaction between man and nature from the beginning of the civilization and they are the source of rejuvenation and losses. The fight to conquer or live with the floods remains a matter of how we perceive the threat and what measures are available at our disposal. If we are able to foresee the hazard, we can estimate the vulnerability and this helps to take countermeasures to reduce the damage and loss. With the advances in numerical modelling, remote sensing technology and geographical information system (GIS), it is now possible to simulate floods as well as possible consequences. Hydrologic models are used to estimate the runoff from rainfalls over a catchment while hydrodynamic models can be used to prepare flood hazard maps. Both types of models can be used together to determine flood hazard for effectively manage the flood risk.

Course Modules
